Castro Marim beaches

Castro Marim has a small coastline of only three beaches: Praia Verde, Praia da Alagoa and Praia do Cabeço.

As opposed to most beaches in the southern Algarve, famous for its rugged cliffs, the beaches of Castro Marim feature a stunning backdrop of low sandy dunes. During the summer the water is quite warm and sometimes it can reach more than 24ºC. The three beaches attract many families from Portugal, but also from Spain, which is just across the border from Castro Marim.

The best beach in Castro Marim is Praia Verde. Praia Verde literally means “Green Beach” and gets its name from the green landscape of pine trees that shelters the beach. Besides its incredible natural setting, Praia Verde is surrounded by a variety of trendy restaurants that are worth checking out. Among them is the Restaurante Infante Panorâmico, a charming restaurant that has its own swimming pool and provides wonderful views of the coast. Here, you can try local fish dishes or simply indulge in a glass of champagne.

Whether you’re sitting at one of the restaurants overlooking the beach or taking a swim in the ocean, Praia Verde is a great place to relax in the Algarve. There is a watersports operator on the beach where you can rent canoes, jet skis and pedal boats. In the winter, Praia Verde is also a popular spot for kitesurfing.

Also known as Praia de Altura, Praia da Alagoa is located between Praia Verde and Praia da Lota in Manta Rota. Backed by dunes covered in lush vegetation, the beach is classified as an “Accessible Beach” and can be reached through the wooden walkways set across the dunes. On the beach, there are a couple of restaurants serving light meals and sun loungers available for hire.

Finally, there is Praia do Cabeço, a quiet beach where you can often spot chameleons basking in the sun and many bird species flying around. Praia do Cabeço is easy to reach by car and there are several parking spots available behind the beach. The beach has a long stretch of sand and is set right next to Praia Verde and its pine forest, bringing a cool breeze to sunbathers.
